Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a wonderful break. I will continue to establish our routines in the class this week. Each child is part of a coloured group and has a shape within that group. So ask them about that. My plan is that on Mondays I will give you a note in the homework folder with the homework for the week. It will also let you know some of the things we are doing in class. Homework will usually tie into what we are doing in class that week. We will be learning and revising words containing our Jolly Phonics sounds every day. I’ll be focusing on the words containing digraphs for the next while. Digraphs are the Jolly Phonics sounds that have 2 letters – such as “oa” and “ai”. If you want to know the Jolly Phonics sounds then check out the Jolly Phonics link on our class website.
I will give out 2 readers per week. (Just 1 this week on Wednesday) If the children enjoy reading then fluent reading will follow. So try to make it more enjoyable and less of a chore. The children may not have seen some of the words before so give them time to sound or “attack” the words using the skills they have learned through Jolly Phonics. Help your child to understand the story by talking about the cover and predicting what they think might be happen in the story. Talk about the pictures on each page and ask them questions about things in the pictures. At the end ask them what they thought about the book, what was their favourite part, did they find it funny/scary/sad? Did they learn anything new from it? On the second day, please read the story a second time. Then fill out the reading log. The reading log can be kept in the homework folder. We will get back to reading “What A Mess” in a week or two.
I am committed to working with you the parents and guardians to help the children progress and enjoy school so please do ask me questions or let me know anything that might help me achieve this. This week we will be learning how to read the names of the children in the class and about the story of 6 (Ways to make 6 e.g. 0+6=6, 1+5=6 etc). Thanks for sending in the clothes for the musical. I do still need costumes from some children. We will be trying those out next week. Thanks Mr Gleeson
Jolly Phonics – section of the 42 sounds in order with a sample word.
Jolly Phonics Activities – for each sound up to “or” – as in fork 1. Children make the sound and show you the action. (e.g. a, a, a ants on my arm) 2. Ask the children for a word or words starting or containing that sound. (ant, apple, Alice, etc)
Word Wallet – Red words
Word Wallet. Each child will get their own word wallet on Tuesday. We will be using these throughout the year. In the wallet is a red and white card. Red Card = Names of children in the class. As we learn the words we will cut them out of the red card in class. The white cards are for matching and not are to be cut. The children can “match” by placing coloured cards on top of the white card. These short activities should be done every day for homework. (4 times a week) Word Wallet activities. 1. Match the red card to its place on the white card. (Place the red Jasmine on top of the white Jasmine) 2. Say the word. 3. Ask the children for a sentence with that word in it. (Jasmine has a blue dress) If a word/sound gets lost just make a new one. These activities will change throughout the year. Reminders PE Our PE days are Mondays and Thursdays so children can wear their tracksuits on those days. This is TBC. Lunches Children are now getting the school lunch. If they don’t eat something I will send that home so you will know. If you want to change your child’s lunch order then drop me a note in the homework folder. You can view your child’s current lunch order on our class website. It’s the link on the left hand side called “School Lunches”. Questions If there are any questions please ask. If you can’t make it into the school my email is vincent.gleeson@stannesps.ie for any questions. I usually check that every day.
